Welcome to Mrs. Stites' Web Page!

Welcome to our class web page. My name is Joi Stites.  I have taught first grade for 33 years.  I enjoy teaching and try to make learning fun. First grade is packed with new adventures for the children as they learn to read and explore many new concepts in math, science, social studies, etc...   Making a web page is a new experience for me.   Please understand this is a work in progress.  I hope you find it useful.

A Math homework page and a math facts page will be sent home daily.  Your child is expected to do side B of their homework and have it checked by you.  This is daily communication to you concerning how your child is doing in math.  If they are struggling with their homework, they are probably struggling with those concepts at school.

Each Friday your child will bring home a Reading Homework page.  This list consists of words and concepts we have studied during that particular week.  Your child should read it to you, practice any words they did not know, and then return it to school with your signature on Monday.  This is my communication to the parents to show how your child is doing in reading.  If your child is struggling with many of the words, extra practice at home may be necessary.

We will have a Spelling test each Friday.  I send home the words to be tested on Monday.  We practice these words daily in class.  Your child is expected to practice at home also.  If they are missing spelling words, extra practice at home would be helpful.

Now that we have the Reading for Ribbons program, your child may take home a classroom book daily.  They should read it to you.  Then please sign a reading slip and send it back to school with your child.  Also please mark on the 'I love to Read' calendar with how much time your child spent reading.  Your child may read books from the Library or from home to be counted for both of these programs.

Reading for Ribbons and I Love to Read Programs

The first grade Reading for Ribbons program is a mandatory program for first grade.  Each child is able to take home a book from my classroom daily to be read to their parents.  After listening to your child read the book, the parent should sign a reading slip stating the name of the book, the date, and who listened to the child read.

When a child reads 10 books, they receive a white ribbon. After 25 they receive a green ribbon.  After 40 the child receives a red ribbon, and then is able to choose books from the red dot shelf which have a higher level of vocabulary.  After 60 books are read the child receives a blue ribbon and is able to choose books from the blue dot shelf which again, has an even higher level of ability.  When the child has read 80 books they receive a purple ribbon.  When they have read 100 books, the child receives a gold ribbon and then may choose books from the yellow dot shelf, which contains books with more content and higher vocabulary skills also.  There are also chapter books in the yellow dot books, which count the same as reading several books.

Recognition and special awards will be given at the end of the year to those children who read well above 100 books.

This reading program lasts from January until May.  The purpose is to help each child gain reading vocabulary and strong word attack skills.  It also gives parents an opportunity to spend time with their child listening to them read.
